Brightwater Pilot Project

Aged Care

Brightwater Pilot Project

BRIGHTWATER CARE GROUP UNDERTOOK A PILOT STAGE REFURBISHMENT TO A ONE OF THEIR RESIDENTIAL HOUSES IN SUBIACO. THE SCOPE INCLUDED REFURBISHMENT OF A SAMPLE RESIDENTS BEDROOM AND ENSUITE, ALL HALLWAYS TO THE HOUSE, KITCHEN, DINING, SITTING AND LOUNGE AREAS. NEW LIGHTING AND FINISHES SCHEMES THROUGHOUT WERE IMPLEMENTED IN PREPARATION OF AN ORGANISATION WIDE REFURBISHMENT OF THEIR FACILITIES TO REFLECT BEST PRACTICE IN MODERN AGED CARE.

Features of this project included:

– Whilst 98% of all our projects occur within live environments, this project took that description and amplified it. In a high care area, residents remained throughout the project but had to leave their rooms at 9am and return at 5pm Monday to Friday, with our works occurring only during these times.

– This, combined with an accelerated programme to minimise disruption to staff, residents and family members as well as a far later than usual start time, meant the project was not without its challenges.

– It required careful subcontractor selection as well as drawing upon our good relationships with them to ensure programme was adhered to as well as the rules for working within such a sensitive space.

– Each day the site was set up for works from 9am and then each night packed down, ensuring everything was safe and habitable. An added complexity was that the sample bedroom and ensuite was also occupied throughout the works requiring careful planning and programming. Our collaborative approach as well as open communication throughout with both the client and the architect was critical to the success of the project.

– Client led Value Engineering to investigate alternatives for cost saving options assisted with overall project cost reductions whilst delivering the vision of the design and functionality of the space for staff.

– The final design provided a new relaxed atmosphere, removing old elements that made the environment feel clinical in areas and delivering spaces that made residents, their families and friends feel comfortable; more in keeping with their houses. Timber features, soft edges, planting and a subtle palette of colour provided warmth.
